Abstract: This essay examines the status of the example and the exemplary in two senses: first, as the place, function, and value of the literary example in computational humanities; and, second, as the exemplary author, the author that stands in for and represents a much wider school or field. When it comes to digital humanities, Franco Moretti—rightly or wrongly (but this is part of the contested state of examples)—still is “the example.” At stake in the article is Moretti’s computational challenge to literary theory via the overdetermined example of Hegel’s reading of Antigone. Sophocles’ drama—which for Hegel provides the exemplary tragic structure of “two equally justified” powers colliding (the law of the home and the law of the state in the figures of Antigone and Creon)—becomes the proxy for Moretti’s own “equally dear” powers in conflict, close and distant reading.
