“Radioactive Unicorn” is based on the “Khaggavisana Sutta” (Rhinoceros Horn Sutra), an early Pali Buddhist text, which exhorts the Buddhist practitioner to roam alone like a rhinoceros, without attachments. According to J.A.B. van Buitenen, the Western lore surround ing the mythical unicorn may be traced to the rhinoceros of this sutra. During my time at Djerassi, Environmental Stewardship Coordinator Andrew Nguyen explained that in the event of an environmental disaster such as a nuclear meltdown, certain species of plants and animals might adapt to the conditions, even as the contaminated zone would remain toxic to humans. The following poem, “Radioactive Unicorn,” imagines just such a scenario, with a unicorn as a mutant domestic bull roaming a contaminated prairie. The very fact that the grasslands of Djerassi Ranch, a former cattle ranch and current conservation easement, requires protection got me thinking about the limits of isolated environmental safeguards.

(© Vidhu Aggarwal)
