the links between the Atlantic slave trade and theWorld economymay find useful information in Domingues da Silva’s book, even though he, and Mariana Candido, seems to overestimate the role of “Brazilian” merchants in financing and supplying the Angola slave trade and, thus, assign overemphasis to the South Atlantic approach. Despite these remarks, these books are great achievements for the study of the Atlantic slave trade. They reinstate the debate on the Portuguese enslaving activities at Angola and their consequences for the Bantu people. In reading those works, one just cannot forget that the building of the modern economy and its global connections— including the flow of precious metals, luxuries, manufactures, and commodities—rested upon the dehumanizing process of enslavement, in which Portuguese slave trade played a key role from the inception.
