Documentation for the book is extensive. The author assembled a treasure trove, enabling a more defined picture of music learning in this time and why it mattered. If only the smells, sights, and sounds of the era were alive in this book! The account touches interesting events that hint at the vibrant social life in New York City during the almost seven decades of the HOA Band. For example, the author mentions public policy surrounding concerns of “city noise,” a controversy that deeply involved the HOA Band. An interesting graphic depicting the sources of noise pollution around 1930 that includes musical instruments! Imagine hot summer evenings, with apartment windows agape, and the cacophony of NYC. Among the unnerving “damnable din” was the sound of a trumpet player practicing for the upcoming parade. The reader is given the data and relates to the HOA Band but must infer the larger societal story and its impact. There are several such byways enticingly uncovered yet left unexplored, awaiting a motivated researcher to continue a journey that the author has begun. Though we are decades beyond the final days of the HOA Band, there still might be time to learn of those who may have been touched by the ensemble and are still around to tell their stories. That next chapter is out there to be written. In the meantime, this book is waiting to be read by music educators and historians.
