Thank you, Jere, for that introduction and thanks to the organizers of this great symposium, especially Phillip Hash, Patti Tolbert, George McDow, Michele Gregoire, Alan Spurgeon, and again Jere Humphreys. To be asked to speak by those I admire constitutes a deep personal honor for me. Our apprenticeship as a field of scholarly endeavor is long over, and it is time to move forward in terms of scholarship and theoretical awareness and to celebrate, even ballyhoo, our accomplishments.1 The continuing contributions of the Journal of Historical Research in Music Education edited by Marie McCarthy, the triennial sponsorship of a symposium by the History Research Special Interest Group, and the growing list of excellent books and articles related to the history of music teaching and learning speaks to the strength of the field and the dedication and skill of its practitioners.
