embodies “Ireland’s wrongs and England’s perfidy” (275). To return to my proposed epigraph, what would readers make of the phrase’s four opening words: “A man of genius”? “[G]enius” may be an extravagant epithet to use in relation to MacCabe, but it would not be entirely unfounded. The fact that Oxford University Press was willing to publish what is, essentially, MacCabe’s odds and ends may, for some, be reason enough to grant him such a high appellation. Perpetual Carnival is, at least, a welcome reminder of MacCabe’s worth as a writer, his ease with words, his flair for truly innovative interdisciplinary thinking, and his passionate defense of his field. Thus, I stand by the aptness of my proposed Joycean epigraph and await its appearance in the second edition of Perpetual Carnival, should Oxford University Press be prudent enough to publish one.
