Building upon a slew of studies in the past 30 years on intertextuality and the literary reuse of biblical traditions, Jeremy Corley, Geoffrey Miller, and their contributors turn their attention to a large and important body of early Jewish literature often categorized as deuterocanonical. Dedicated to the memory of Alexander Di Lella, the book is the outcome of critical discussions at the Deuterocanonical Books Continuing Seminar of the Catholic Biblical Association of America. The 13 essays in this volume address a broad array of lingering questions on intertextuality, using the deuterocanonical works as an organizing body of evidence. The book has a number of critical aims: (1) to propose a methodological distinction between authorand reader-oriented intertextuality, with a noticeable tilt toward a preference for author-centred approaches; (2) to evaluate criteria for determining an instance of reuse by an ancient author; and (3) to incorporate early Jewish literature into a larger discussion of intertextuality in Jewish and Christian antiquity, treating the deuterocanonical works as a type literary corpus. The contributions of this volume are a rich repository of thorough textual reasoning and careful methodological reflection in a particular vein (building largely from Benjamin Sommer and Dennis MacDonald, but also reaching back to Michael Fishbane and literary critics like Ben Porat and Kristeva). Following a lengthy exposition of the volume’s main points in the form an editorial introduction, the first set of essays examine the role of Jewish scriptural works and their texts in the composition and interpretation of deuterocanonical works, a section entitled ‘Looking to the Past.’ These essays want to know how the use of the Old Testament in the deuterocanonical works informed their shape and message. There are essentially two types of essays in this book, with some necessary line blurring, and this section is no different. It contains first a number of contributions that are primarily observational and data gathering, describing the variegated ways that the authors of the deuterocanonical works referenced and made use of antecedent scriptural traditions from Jewish scripture. Corley’s article, for example, catalogues references to Abraham, Moses, and David in Tobit, Ben Sira, 1–2 Maccabees, Judith, Baruch, 912555 ITQ0010.1177/0021140020912555Irish Theological QuarterlyBook Reviews book-reviews2020
