non-recovery of notes left in the Arctic with the success of an informal post office on Charles (now Floreana) Island in the Pacific. Yet, contrary to the impression she gives, news could be circulated between northern expeditions. For example, during the Franklin search Richard Collinson found notes from Robert McClure and John Rae, and a message left by Collinson himself was retrieved by an officer serving under Henry Kellett. Most significantly, after McClure’s ship became icebound a note left at Winter Harbour, Melville Island (which served as a kind of post office) brought rescue from Kellett. None of these criticisms negate the value of the diligent archival research at the book’s core. For readers interested in the culture of polar exploration, The News at the Ends of the Earth is an indispensable guide to the inner workings of expeditionary communities.
