Some maritime museums, however, have started co-operations with adjacent universities and formed research bodies that initiated multidisciplinary research projects, as well as inaugurating PhD programmes and joining the transnational academic discourse. These initiatives are dependent on active promotion by research directors. Once these directors retire, their research initiatives are often jeopardised.
