future magnetometer searches would be helpful and hand drawn site maps indicate that there is more work to complete the project of specific site identification. Results of the investigation suggest that the wreck site of the Convert is known based upon a cannon scatter, while the identity of the lost merchantmen remains more of a mystery. The limitations encountered in precisely identifying sites from the event under study in no way diminish the book’s importance as a document of this specific episode in the Islands’ history. On the contrary, they illuminate the hazards any researcher will encounter when trying to determine the complex processes that go into creating a national identity through the lens of historical association. Also, it highlights the difficulties in making firm conclusions regarding observed material culture that undergoes uncontrollable wrecking and scrambling process of nature over centuries. As Leshikar-Denton states clearly: ‘The merchantmen of the Wreck of the Ten Sail are difficult to identify precisely, but hypothesis can be made’ (192). All illustrations and reproductions are in black and white. Cartographic representations are an important tool, and Cayman’s 1794 is well mapped. The modern maps are simple but effective; places mentioned are easily located so it is difficult to become geographically confused. The use of historic maps is spare, but again appropriate. The other illustrations, photographs and reproductions of historic documents are useful and instructive to the discussion. Additionally, copious notes, appendices, bibliography and index are provided for those who wish to learn more about the wrecking episode and as a guide for any researcher who wishes to take up the baton of wreck site investigations off Grand Cayman’s east coast. With this monograph Leshikar-Denton presents the maritime community the most up-to-date research on the wreck of the Ten Sail. Much is left to be done to complete a full archaeological investigation of these and many other sites along the east coast of Grand Cayman. The story told should be of interest to those of a maritime bent, as well as the general history of the late eighteenth century, and the contest between Revolutionary France and Great Britain. Students of history and archaeology may also appreciate this book for the processes that are practiced in order to accomplish the recovery of oral, documentary and material culture.
