Abstract:How do we do our work as scholars in times of extreme emergency? Specifically, how does this work get done in the midst of a global pandemic—when archives and libraries are closed—and in the midst of global protests and conversations on racism and white supremacy? This essay attempts to answer these questions by reflecting on my experiences using the Slavery and Anti-Slavery: A Transnational Archive (SAS) database during these times of emergency. I describe the comprehensive nature of the SAS database, including examples of its many collections, resources, and research tools. Throughout the essay, I reflect on the value and the limitations of such a wide-ranging archive.
