concentration on the former, the choice of the title The Hymnal for the volume is curious (the subtitle does help in understanding the principal thrust of the volume). It is certainly easy for titles to become overly long and cumbersome by trying to include everything that a monograph is or is not about, but one would not guess by the title or subtitle that this book deals almost exclusively with Englishlanguage hymnbooks of the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries, with a largely American focus. The Hymnal: A Reading History is a work that demonstrates the profound impact of hymnbooks on British and American society during the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries. The author reminds us that the hymnbook pervaded many areas of cultural life and that it played an important role in developing a taste for and appreciation of poetry in the United States. Students of hymnody and literature in general will find this to be a fascinating contribution to scholarship on two centuries of Englishlanguage literary culture.

The Hymnal: A Reading History
