In this chapter, Orford awards the prize for “most bizarre theory” to a 1989 book, The Mystery of Edwin Drood Solved, in which the main characters are given counterparts as classical gods and goddesses. For example, Honeythunder is Zeus, Jasper is Pan, and Edwin is Orion. The storylines surrounding the novel’s characters are played out similarly to those surrounding the mythical beings, making for a work rife with rape, incest, and “ a number of illegitimate children” 127). Orford argues, however, that even the most outlandish versions are important in keeping the stories of the characters and ideas surrounding Dickens’s creativity open, fresh, and immortal. The number of names and titles in Orford’s study can be overwhelming. This reader for example, upon seeing names of authors covered in earlier chapters mentioned again while reading later chapters had to go back and review their contributions. Still, Orford is to be commended for his attempt to cover a great number of Drood completions and solutions. With its straightforward, witty, and sometimes irreverent style, Orford’s book is sure to be of interest to both the Drood scholar and fan.
