From a religious studies perspective, the book covers affect theory and ethics which are disciplinary important concepts, yet there is less of a direct connection to religious studies than I expected. Regardless, Distillations affirms our need for an interdisciplinary approach to critical scholarship. However, for readers who are not well versed in Lacanian theory and Ruti’s previous work, the book does not give a clear indication of what Ruti’s version of universal ethics would look like. Hopefully this book will inspire others to take such a broad understanding of progressive critical theory.
