MCPHERSON: I must have read it in college. I was an English major. I went to black colleges—Morgan State in Baltimore and Morris Brown in Atlanta. Invisible Man opened up a broader world to me. I remember I used to work summers as a dining-car waiter for the Great Northern Railroad. They were segregated trains. When the trains would stop to change engines at Chattanooga, Tennessee, there would be a black man serving sandwiches and coffee and he would come on in the black coach and he would say, “We’re in the North now. Y’all can go up front.” Nobody moved. Nobody moved. My life during those summers was run by white people in that coach. I was scared. Then we got to St. Paul, Minnesota, and I was hungry. I hadn’t eaten since I left Atlanta. I went into a restaurant and ordered a hamburger and sat next to a white woman and her child. I was scared. But Ralph had told me you shouldn’t be scared, that you had to take some chances, some risks. You had to open your mind up, you know?
