The Body Inside-Out: Anatomical Memory at Maubuisson Abbey
Art History Pub Date : 2019-03-06 , DOI: 10.1111/1467-8365.12425
Jack Hartnell

The now-destroyed Abbey of Maubuisson, situated just northwest of Paris, was a religious foundation that housed an unusual number of visceral objects. By charting a long and consistent history of distinctly bodily artworks commissioned for the institution, this article unearths a proclivity at Maubuisson for flipping human forms inside-out. From the abbey’s Shrine Madonna and the controversially divided body of its founder, Blanche of Castile, to its multiple entrail tombs memorialising generations of royal body-parts, and even the performative discovery of ancient intestines hidden within its very walls, the article reconstructs what we might call an anatomical instinct at work across Maubuisson’s medieval and early modern history.
