The goal of this article is to show the tensions and paradoxes of middle class aspirational projects in a gated community of Guadalajara’s metropolitan area. Following a mixed method approach, between 2012 and 2014, field research was undertaken in a gated community in Tlajomulco de Zuniga, Jalisco. Participants’ positioning analysis was done by cross-checking cluster analysis and the associated discourses. The result of this analysis is an account of the social and economic heterogeneity; and of middle class households’ aspirations, contradictions, paradoxes and frustrations while trying to escape downward social mobility in a neocolonial society with persistent inequality.
