Did Arnold ever take the next step to illustrate ‘the best’, or does it remain buried in inaccessible Latin and Greek texts? The remaining fourteen Principles have been shrewdly constructed. Eliot’s potential deal-breakers (cultural homogeneity, Christian worship, a hierarchical society, high culture) have been dropped, and instead we are left with a set of conservative guidelines that would not have been out of place in post-war UK grammar schools (perhaps Tate is remembering his own alma mater): the main languages of human understanding, reason and objectivity, intellectual virtues, an academic curriculum taught mainly through the disciplines, physical activity, differentiated experiences for children of different abilities, national rather than international citizenship, and regular assessment. Tate is proposing evolution rather than revolution, and this should encourage a wider audience to participate in debate than would have been possible had his four guest thinkers’ uncompromising opinions prevailed. Here we have an illustration of an important feature of a reversible change: it produces the maximum amount of useful work. Nicholas Tate’s struggle against the current has produced a coherent alternative to la pensée unique, and while there will be many who will be reluctant to follow his conclusions – after all, we are considering deeply-held beliefs about human nature – very few will fail to be impressed by the scholarship that lies behind them.
