integrative, collaborative behaviours’ in a globalized world which ‘increasingly favours mental power over military might’ (p. 330). Such verdicts articulate objectives that may be desirable, but they sound rather utopian in the world of 2020. Even so, Mushaben’s essay links neatly with the introduction and with many of the other chapters. One might not always agree with what is written in the book and one might wish for more historical perspective. But there is no doubt that the volume deserves to find its place on the reading lists of courses on modern German politics, society and culture. It would be a very thought-provoking reader for an undergraduate or graduate seminar.
