deals with those intellectuals who were members of the Spartakistenbund (Spartacist League) or even more radical political groups who, as one commentator put it, ‘stood well to the left of themselves’. Part VI considers the Rätebewegung (Councils Movement) (pp. 199–235), i.e. those organizations which believed that revolutionary social change could be brought about via revolutionary Councils or Soviets, and with particular reference to the Soviet Republics that were proclaimed in Bremen, Munich and Hamburg (pp. 207–30). And the book’s conclusion (pp. 237–47) summarizes and condenses the salient points of what has gone before. So we are dealing with a comprehensive, well-researched and informative introduction to a confused historical period from which the stabilization phase of the Weimar Republic would emerge in about 1924 and last until the Wall Street Crash in 1929. The book also compares and contrasts a range of texts that deal with the German Revolution, provides a wealth of biographical data on prominent and less prominent individuals from all sides of the political spectrum, and is clearly and stylishly written.
