This issue of JACE begins with two articles that explore different aspects of literacy in North America. Saal and colleagues report on ongoing issue in the US, that of the relationship between U.S. Adults’ information processing skills and political efficacy using data from the Programme for the International Assessment of Adult Competencies (PIAAC). The association is close and not positive, and has considerable implications given the forthcoming presidential election, and use of a range of voting methods. Further north in Canada, Holloway and Gouthro provide an analysis of the use of a multiliteracies approach in the field of adult education drawing upon tow studies funded by the Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council (SSHRC). They argue for the use of the approach in helping to shape the desire of adult learners to change their own lives and their communities. For readers wanting to explore their work further an online platform with exemplars is available.
