Background and motivation What is the variability in early linguistic experiences? How is it related to child language development? In the past four decades, studies conducted from a variety of theoretical perspectives have reached a consensus on the centrality of the context in learning both language forms and uses. Indeed, the studies, most of which have been performed with English-speaking children and in urban environments, have provided extensive evidence of the impact of different contextual factors on language development. In particular, they have noted the importance of the phonological, lexical, syntactic and pragmatic characteristics of the language targeted at the child. Some more recent studies have pursued new avenues of inquiry on this topic. On the one hand, the consideration of socioeconomic differences in English-speaking populations has revealed substantial variability in child linguistic experiences, as well as differences in some aspects of language development. The evidence on the role of the environment highlighted the importance of paying attention to socioeconomic differences in other populations. Likewise, they led to the identification of other cultural characteristics which shape the developmental environments and the analysis of their impact on child language. On the other hand, the importance of tackling the challenge entailed in broadly defining the context of language development has been claimed from different theoretical and methodological vantage points. Considering different semiotic modes — gestures, eye contact, body position — which are interwoven with words in achieving a particular activity may enable us to view aspects of the development process in different environments in an ecological and more valid way. This call for submissions emerges from the interest in encouraging studies that take a variety of theoretical and methodological perspectives to examine child linguistic development in these new directions.
