Unsurprisingly, the recent crisis of the European Union and specifically the case of ‘Brexit’ have led to new research dynamics in the fields of European Studies and European integration history. Recently published works aim at making sense of these processes and provide elements of a more nuanced narrative of EU integration. In these narratives, there is less teleology and phases of crisis and disintegration in EU history play more prominent roles. The four books reviewed in this article reflect these developments. However, their authors come from varying disciplinary backgrounds and thus approach the EU and European contemporary history from very different angles.
