The work’s tenets of political agency, mythmaking, and patronage are, by the editors’ own admission, ‘rather traditional and straightforward methods of looking at queenship’ (2). The balance of biographical detail and in-depth analysis have adapted these methodologies into a study that befits the modern researcher. This volume succinctly proves that many women who fulfilled crucial socio-political roles have been redacted from history. More importantly, however, Schutte and Paranque have demonstrated that these missing histories can be retrieved. The essays in this collection provide readers with approaches which deserve to be reproduced in future research.
