Hero’ in post-Soviet rhetoric. To be sure, this chapter’s treatment of the tycoon Mikhail Khodorkovsky ends up showing his ‘de-hero-ification’ after initial (positive) comparisons of him with those imprisoned earlier in Russian history. The fact of Khodorkovsky’s release from prison and exit from Russia made it difficult to continue to portray him as a victim or a Russian hero. Still, the Khodorkovsky saga does illustrate how even a fairly unsavoury individual can be glorified (briefly) in Russian rhetoric because of his suffering. Yuliya Minkova’s Making Martyrs presents an interesting argument about an important side of Russian culture: the cult of suffering/sacrifice. One may, however, question whether her theoretical framework (Agamben and Oleg Kharkhordin, in particular) really illuminates her argument rather than obscure it. Still, for those wanting to understand better the recesses of the ‘Russian soul’, this book is recommended.
