Thermal analysis and polarized light microscopy as methods to study the increasing of the durability of PLA designed for 3D printing

Abstract

The aim of the article was to study the possibility to use a sulfonic ester derivative of isophthalic acid as nucleating agent for increasing the durability of poly (lactic acid) designed for 3 D printing. The neat and nucleated PLA achieved via melt compounding were characterized through differential scanning calorimetry, polarized optical microscopy and by measuring its functional properties as Izod impact resistance and heat deflection temperature. The ability of nucleated PLA to be shaped as filaments and the potential of the obtained filaments to be 3 D printed as well were studied. The nucleation with a sulfonic ester derivative of isophthalic acid changes the polymer morphology and therefore generates the improvement of PLA functional properties and its durability. The obtained nucleated PLA is able to be shaped as filaments, which prove to have better 3 D printability because it melts and crystallizes in narrow temperature ranges, crystallizes with high speed, at higher temperature and the 3 D printed items can be quickly removed from the printing support.
