This general edition of Architectural Science Review remindsme of the broad church for the application of science in architecture and the many countries in the world where architectural science is prospering. Increasingly we live in a world where the process of science and its outcomes are being ignoredor denied. So this edition brings to our attention some useful theories and practices which may serve us well into the future. The first paper is by Ayşegül Tereci is titled ‘Biophilic Wisdom of the 13th and 14th Century Seljuk’s Mosque Architecture in Beyşehir, Anatolia.’ This historical analysis examines two of the most well preserved wooden columned and roofed mosques in Turkey. Located in the central part of the country near lake Beysehir has numerous features using natural systems. It is noted that it was common practice for buildings to use timber columns from cedar and preserved through immersion in the lake for an extensive period prior to use in the building. Also buildings contain a snow pit, which is used in summer for cooling. Increasing the use of historical examples for studying Biophilia is becoming an important research direction. To help understand this concept it is important to point out the many features in the buildings, which indicate biophilic principles, which underlie the intent. In a world as it enters the anthropocene with significant human environmental impact, there are efforts to disconnect humans from their actions. Therefore it is important in this disconnected world to research places where there has been greater connectedness with natural systems, in addition to recognising places, which encourage engaging with natural systems. Architectural conservation therefore takes onboth a cultural andenvironmental perspective. The next paper is by Rana Ayman, Zaid Alwan & Lesley McIntyre. Their paper called ‘BIM for sustainable project delivery: reviewpaper and future development areas’, looks at howBuilding Information Modelling (BIM) relates to sustainable design. It is well known that the sustainable design is a complex area however an emerging hypothesis is that the use of BIM can assist with the translation of sustainable design principles into architectural practice. The paper reports on the research carried out to date on this issue. The next two papers use a typological approach to examine behavioural and environmental factors that affect design decisions. The behavioural paper is byAsyaNatapov, Saskia Kuliga, Ruth Conroy Dalton & Christoph Hölscher called ‘Linking buildingcirculation typology and wayfinding: design, spatial analysis, and anticipated wayfinding difficulty of circulation types’. The authors evaluate different types of building circulation systems from the wayfinding perspective. This area of architectural science has been well studied in recent years and is normally applied at the urban scale. However, this study examines thebuilding scale anduses. The authors havedeveloped the methodology accordingly. The environmental paper is by Hossein Omrany, Amirhosein Ghaffarianhoseini, Umberto Berardi, Ali Ghaffarianhoseini & Danny H. W. Li. They ask the question ‘Is atrium an ideal form for daylight in buildings?’ This paper reviews the literature of the atrium form and its suitability for bringing daylight in buildings. Atrium buildings are a well-studied area in ASR. This paper provides an update to the literature in this area, which is complemented with simulation studies. The study is focused however there is a wider set of issues outside the scope of this paper concerningwhether courtyards are better for daylighting than the atria form. There is increasing research around this broader question. The next paper is a simulation study and is called ‘Integrating building shape optimization into the architectural design process’ and is by Aram Yeretzian, Hmayag Partamian, Mayssa Dabaghic and Rabih Jabr. The paper examines architectural design priorities for buildings forwarmandhot climates from the environmental perspective. The evolution and development of software mean that it is now possible to examine the effects of insolation from both the thermal and visual perspective in the design process. This means both qualitative and quantitative data can be collected in the design process and used for decision making. Developing tools that can assist with this process means that in theory more effective shading management can be achieved. The penultimate paper by Ruth Tamas, Mohamed M. Ouf & William O’Brien presents ‘A field study on the effect of building automationonperceived comfort and control in institutional buildings.’ In recent years thequestionof how to improveof indoor environmental quality has become an important research topic due to the prevalence of sick building syndrome. Investigating occupant satisfaction through post-occupancy studies has been one method to investigate these issues. A prevailing principle is to allowoccupants control of their environment however there has been increasing automation on environmental controls in buildings. How this relates to occupant satisfaction is an increasingly important research question? This Edition is concluded by a parametric study by authors Ardekani, Amirreza, Iman Dabbaghchian, Matin Alaghmandan, Mahmood Golabchi, Mahmood Hosseini, and Rasoul Mirghaderi called ‘Parametric Design of Diagrid Tall Buildings Regarding Structural Efficiency.’ There has been ongoing research reported in ASR on this structural type. This paper looks at the issues of the form of this type of structure and asks questions about what is the optimum
