The preservation of Han Chinese and ethnic minority classics comes in line with the global movement of cultural heritage and folkloric nationalism. Manuscripts written in Yi symbols, therefore, receive more and more scholarly attention. The Illustrations of Yi Classics is a valuable addition to the existing Chinese translations of Yi manuscripts, as it provides not only visual aids but also hints of knowledge transmission through generations and across places. This review article deciphers one by one three major parts of this book: funeral picture-scrolls, cosmological symbols, and fortune-telling drawings. It aims to contextualize this book by describing how these illustrations function in the everyday life of Yi people, and by cross-referencing other books published before it.
