with the challenge of overcoming the symptoms of poverty. A major strength of the book is the ability to connect research and practice. Anecdotal and empirical data provide context as to why working with diverse students matters. Combining that background context with proven practical approaches allows readers to understand the different realities of community college students. Chapters written by senior leaders highlight the importance of supporting equitable outcomes, inclusiveness on campus, and recognizing student’s different experiences in community colleges. One weakness of the book is the absence of the application of theoretical or conceptual models of student success. Given the practical focus of the book, use of these frameworks are valued more in scholarly literature but certainly can add value to leaders and practitioners looking to support students. In addition, some of the research on students referenced the experiences of 4-year college students, who are different in many ways from community college students. However, this could be attributed to the lack of research on certain community college student populations. One of the primary objectives of the book is to initially explain how and why educational inequities exist for racial/ethnic groups. Furthermore, by placing social issues such as racism and poverty at the center of the discussion, scholars and educators remind us of the challenges faced not only by students of color but also by White students (see Chapters 13-15). Readers will gain a general understanding of the student diversity that exists in community colleges. Community college presidents, senior administrators, faculty, student affairs professionals, and anyone else concerned about improving equitable outcomes in the community college sector will find benefit in the informative data and insightful narrative. New scholars, researchers, and educational leaders will learn about demographic and enrollment data as well as the best practices and approaches in working with these student populations. This book is a major contribution in increasing our understanding of the complexity of issues faced by community colleges students. It is also a timely and important book because it serves as a reminder of the important role community colleges have in increasing upward social mobility and helping students overcome racism and poverty.

(与AlfredR.L.SydowD.)。(2017)。
