Over recent months there has been much discussion on the Forum of Government and other announcements about the arrangements for carrying out special needs-related guidance during the coronavirus pandemic. For example, it has been important for SENCos to be informed about the relaxation of statutory procedures. In the previous column, a distinction was drawn between these attempts to ‘patch up’ existing policy and practice on the one hand, and, on the other hand, to consider the broader issue of the need to modify aspects of the existing education ‘system’ which might be engendering the need for ‘patching up’. More recently, however, there have been calls for this wider issue to be considered. Attempts to cope with the circumstances of the pandemic have questioned aspects of the ‘system’, and led to the exploration of what the ‘new normal’ might look like. So it seemed relevant in the present column briefly to address a few of these wider issues.

SENCo-Forum
