that was itself the product of imperialism. Lawyers, paradoxically, both supported the existing imperial order and fostered a degree of Nigerian pan-nationalism that eventually worked to dislodge the colonial establishment. This volume as a whole is greater than the sum of its parts. It is carefully, meticulously researched. More significantly, it raises fundamental questions about lawyers and the legal profession and how these both relate to and seek to control the environments they inhabit. These questions are addressed by carefully framed, interlocking arguments which are original, complex and imaginative. The comparative perspective is an illuminating one. While Canadian scholars will undoubtedly be drawn to this work it is of importance and interest to those concerned with the British empire. This is a work which succeeds in shedding much light on how lawyers through their legal professionalism seek to impose control. That it does so with a dry wit and frequent illustrations provides entertainment to this educative function. The professional esteem that this volume holds can be seen in the award of the Canadian Law and Society Association’s Book Prize for 2017. This is a book to be read and re-read.
