As the author writes “luck definitely helps but being positioned for good luck to occur is often paramount” (17). Some of these stories – not a lot though – are about failures and nonlinear trajectories, two things that are good to think about in history. In general, this book is pleasant to read, except for some typos in the bibliographies. This is a public history book, designed for nonspecialists. Because it relies on older paradigms (“the discovery of the West”, 18), it should not be used in the classroom.
