ABSTRACT

This article examines the fly-net around Holofernes’ bed in Judith to argue that the Old English poet refashions his source material to imagine the atmosphere of political intrigue at the centre of the Assyrian ruler’s power. Moreover, because of the fly-net, Judith’s decapitation of the ruler takes on new meaning when compared with the beheading in the Vulgate source.
