ABSTRACT

This article deals with the ideological development of Danish conservatism in the 1940s. During the German occupation, conservatives developed a platform strongly stressing national cohesion not only under the specific conditions of the occupation but also as an ideal for postwar society. This article explores the ideological roots of that position in different strands of interwar conservatism and in the specific experiences of occupation. It is argued that the new platform, conceptualized as ‘one nation conservatism’, which expressed a critique of doctrinaire liberalism and proposed an ideal of economic democracy, is best understood in relation to the broader European context. More specifically the development of postwar Christian Democracy, whose influence in Scandinavia has otherwise been overlooked. Finally, the article deals with the dissolution of this conservative post war platform. It attributes this fall to the failure of coming to terms with the reality of bloc politics that soon replaced the broad political consensus of the occupation years. The article contributes to the growing literature in English on conservatism and Christian Democracy by drawing on the existing Danish literature and a wide array of source materials to provide the neglected and often ignored, national case of Danish conservatism.
