ABSTRACT

This article examines the relationship between actual historical events and the way they are interpreted in Aleksandra Brushtein’s autobiographical trilogy The Road Goes into the Distance [Doroga ukhodit v dal’], as well as the ‘shift of intention’ the trilogy represents from the diary entries of twelve-year-old Sasha Vygodskaia to her finalized text. This analysis is based on materials from Brushtein’s personal archive and the Lithuanian State Historical Archives. This is the first time these documents have been put to scholarly use.
