ABSTRACT The relationship between the Anglo-Irish novelist Maria Edgeworth and the Scottish Enlightenment was established through the pioneering work of the late Marilyn Butler, whose insights have been taken up by many others. This essay draws on unpublished correspondence to broaden our understanding of the connections of Maria Edgeworth and her father with the late Scottish Enlightenment, through discussing their networking, even their sense of community, with leading figures of Whig Edinburgh between 1800 and 1815. After the Edgeworths’ Edinburgh visit in 1803, friendships were built with the immediate circle of Dugald Stewart and his wife Helen, and came to include the novelist and educationalist Elizabeth Hamilton, the advocate of emigration, Lord Selkirk, the editor of the Edinburgh Review, Francis Jeffrey, and the young medical student, Henry Holland. These relationships, often warm and affectionate though not without tensions, were maintained by correspondence and the exchange of books, and by occasional visits by Scots to Edgeworthstown. The philosophical outlook of Maria Edgeworth’s outstanding works, shaped by her close reading of the major works of the Scottish Enlightenment, was also encouraged by the web of connections and sense of intellectual community that she found, even from a distance, in Edinburgh.
