The persistence of yellow in Italian film noir

ABSTRACT

The Italian publisher Mondadori is credited as the source of the word giallo when it started bringing out detective fiction in yellow covers in 1929. This article explores the antecedents of the word from the influence of the French feuilletons, pulp fiction featuring the lurid crimes of master criminals such as Fantômas which were published in colourful covers with titles frequently picked out in yellow. These were immensely popular as film serials and were exported to Italy and all over Europe. Analysis of Assunta Spina, the serials featuring Za-la-Mort (1913–1924) and the Pirandello adaptation Enrico IV shows Italian filmmakers adopting stylistic elements that would coalesce in later Italian film noir.
