Virtual Reality Fostering Empathy: Meet the Enemy

T he Enemy, a “virtual reality experience at the crossroads of journalism, technology and science” (Phi Centre, 2018), is an art installation by Karim Ben Khelifa, a longtime war photographer and photojournalist. Frustrated by the minimal impact of war images on the attitude of the general public toward armed conflict and its concomitant suffering, Ben Khelifa turned to virtual reality technology to create an immersive experience in the hope of redressing public indifference and galvanizing antiwar sentiment (MIT Center for Art, Science & Technology, n.d., para. 3). In recent years, other practicing artists, museum curators, and art educators have acknowledged pedagogical potentials of implementing augmented and virtual reality technologies within their projects. Augmented reality simulates artificial objects in the real environment, whereas virtual reality uses computer technology to create a simulated environment and places the user inside an artificial environment (Bardi, 2019). In augmented reality, various sensors and algorithms are used to determine the position and orientation of a camera. Technology renders the 3D graphics of the virtual object as they would appear from the viewpoint of the camera.
