A ntagonistic arts-based research (ABR) sounds like a dangerous proposition. It conjures images of self-serving, artist-academics causing pain and exploiting their institutional power. It carries the stench of the colonial research practices of past and present that so many in the art education field labor not to replicate. Antagonistic ABR seems counter to the emotional impulse of the current moment, when divisive American political discourse begs for scholastic communities to practice empathy and caregiving. Antagonism is, according to the Merriam-Webster online dictionary (n.d.), “opposition of a conflicting force, tendency, or principle” or, perhaps worse for research, “actively expressed opposition or hostility.” To be an antagonistic researcher is, therefore, to act in opposition to others or ideas with the intention of learning something. It flies in the face of research ethics best practices to assert that the productivity of artist– researchers could increase by fostering participant discomfort. To deny the risks of antagonistic ABR is naïve, but I believe ignoring the urgent need for art education to make space for more confrontational, socially engaged ABR is a more dangerous alternative. Over the course of the past 30 years, socially engaged art—a form of visual art that is centered around the involvement of participants in the creation of a work—has risen in popularity. Today, this form of art is also referred to as social practice, participatory art, and live art and is characterized by “To deny the risks of antagonistic ABR is naïve, but I believe ignoring the urgent need for art education to make space for more confrontational socially engaged ABR is a more dangerous alternative.”
