Early in April, the fourth international S Word symposium took place at the Valletta campus of the University of Malta. Taking as it’s focus Stanislavski in Context, the event, which attracted delegates from the USA, Canada, Australia, the UK, Czech Republic, Russia, Poland and Belgium, included keynote addresses by Professor Laurence Senelick (Tufts University) and Professor Vicki Ann Cremona (University of Malta)., and offered participants 25 papers and 8 practical workshops. Selected material from that event will be published in the Spring 2020 edition of this journal. The S Word is also responsible for generating the content of this current edition. A Practical Acting Laboratory, convened by Professor Bella Merlin at The University of California, Riverside, marked a significant departure from the established format of these events. Instead of the usual mix of scholarly papers and practical workshops, this event was shaped by threemaster-teachers, who each led a series of practical workshops focused upon a research question of their own devising: Professor Sharon Marie Carnicke (University of Southern California), Professor Kimberly Guerrero (University of California, Riverside) and the distinguished actor and director Tina Packer (Shakespeare and Co.). The papers in this edition of the journal provide a vivid and varied picture of the Riverside symposium and include many revealing personal reflections upon the evergrowing importance of practice as a research tool. Bella Merlin sums this up perfectly in her introductory note published in the symposium programme: “Practice-based research foregrounds experimental, embodied knowledge. It allows for the wisdom of intuition and instinct as well as the intellect. It has the capacity to change our understanding of the world at a molecular level as we engage our bodies, hearts and spirits in the actual process of enquiry.” This event, and the material that we now publish from it, have served to remind me once again of the vital link between practice and theoretical scholarship, and particularly the ability of this combination to provoke new thinking and new approaches to our work in a very revealing and immediate way. As The S Word continues to actively promote the cross-fertilisation of practical and academic research, so this journal will also continue to share some of the results be they newly-explored theses, the revisiting of existing material viewed from a fresh perspective or developing themes emanating from experimental practice. This edition quietly celebrates another important development for our journal – the inclusion of linked video material. It has been our intention for some time to introduce “video articles” and audio-visual material which relates to the text articles that form the greater part of our output. The debut video, which can be viewed via the on-line edition or via the link included in the print edition, supplements the article by Bella Merlin which contextualises the Practical Acting Laboratory. We particularly welcome proposals from authors who would like to present their work in this format. STANISLAVSKI STUDIES 2019, VOL. 7, NO. 1, 1–2 https://doi.org/10.1080/20567790.2019.1583943

1, 1–2 https://doi.org/10.1080/20567790.2019.1583943
