ABSTRACT The oldest extant Tamil ‘place history’ (tala purāṇam) of a Sri Lankan temple is Taṭcaṇa Kayilāca Purāṇam, composed circa the sixteenth century, describing Koneswaram at Trincomalee, dubbed a ‘Southern Kailash’ to match Siva’s northern abode. At a crossroads of literary history, this text alludes to older Tamil Caṅkam and bhakti compositions, as well as contemporaneous South Indian purāṇas. Taṭcaṇa Kayilāca Purāṇam thus presents Lanka at an intersection of love-poetry landscapes and the waterways of tīrtha-centred purāṇic theology. The island teems with significant terrains of classical poetics, which are crossed by the Mahaweli River that meets the sea at Koneswaram. This spreads Siva’s presence over Lanka in Tamil terms, connecting the island with continental counterparts via the ocean in an aqueous network of Śaiva associations. Taṭcaṇa Kayilāca Purāṇam therefore makes history by using multiple literary techniques to emplace a Tamil homeland in Lanka, and Lanka in the world.
