“Physio-psychology”: Nietzsche’s mixed discourse

This article is a study of Nietzsche’s philosophical anthropology, and of its practical consequences, starting from the reference to “physio-psychology” in Beyond Good and Evil. Physio-psychology is an art of interpretation that helps us diagnose the drives and instincts at the centre of our values and philosophical commitments, while undermining the supposed autonomy of apparently self-contained domains, such as morality. By focusing our attention on the importance of understanding humans in their specificity, it also serves as the basis for promoting growth and self-overcoming. Central to this project is the notion of “breeding”. This method of cultivating the self requires a community of free-spirited individuals and, Nietzsche argues, can only be successful cross-generationally through careful creation and employment of conditions and circumstances favourable for growth.
