ABSTRACT The purpose of this article is to unpack the racialised, gendered and classed policing of communities in Brazil and South Africa, two useful analytical cases for the study of the militarisation of policing in post-colonial states. As militarisation alone does not fully explain the factors at play in either context, however, the article will also consider the twin process of what has been identified in the literature as the pacification of communities. This requires consideration of several factors, including the capitalist social order that gives rise to militarised police forces. In making a case around the militarisation of policing as a global phenomenon as well as a matter of domestic public policy, the article will trace the history of police militarisation in Brazil and South Africa and seek common factors and substantive differences in the policies.
