ABSTRACT In the Soviet Union, the orientation to spectator sports in the mid-thirties and the rising concurrence between sports societies led to the rewarding of sportsmen for their performance and their victories. This article aims at examining how the Soviet authorities (party, sports administration) dealt with the problem of high wages and illegal remuneration of sportsmen from the 1950s to the end of the 1970s. This article shows the different attempts of regulation that occurred in the realm of Soviet football and the agents implicated in it. Doing so, it helps understanding the tensions and the relations between Soviet sports administration and the sports voluntary societies. The article is based on Russian archives.
