India’s Digital Drag Aunties

As drag subculture emerges in India, it borrows many of its stylistic elements from western drag conventions but, at the same time, incorporates multiple aspects from traditional clothing and popular culture. This paper focuses on two drag artists who have gained notoriety through digital social media: Maya the Drag Queen (performed by Alex Mathew) and Pammi Aunty (performed by Ssumier Pasricha). These artists craft locally rooted drag performances by adapting clothing styles such as the sari and salwar kameez, as well as the role of the disruptive Indian “aunty.” This paper proposes that Indian drag queens challenge heteronormative-gender constructs and promote LGBTQ causes through the use of traditional Indian dress and customs. This choice of presentation gives Indian drag its distinctive quality and also is a fitting extension of a long lineage of activism and political resistance already vested in Indian dress and textiles.
