ABSTRACT This article analyses the notion of ‘impenetrability’ in works by Jules Barbey d’Aurevilly, Remy de Gourmont, and Rachilde, concentrating on their portrayal of ambiguous and incomprehensible demi-vierges. In Decadent literature, the desire for knowledge and the desire for sexual ‘possession’ are inextricably intertwined, and the Decadent ‘ideal’ of impenetrability is based on a paradoxical logic of aesthetic failure and sexual frustration. The figures of the virgin, the dandy, and the femme fatale constitute particularly productive sources of Decadent literary reflection, in which reformulations of earlier literary models are channelled into an aesthetic of hyperbole, parody, and meta-literary irony.
