ABSTRACT Sarah Bernhardt came to represent contradictory beliefs about the moral state of French society during and after the Franco-Prussian war (1870–1871) as her celebrity uniquely situated her to encapsulate debates around women’s bodies and nationalism after what contemporaries saw as France’s heroic resistance and humiliating defeat. I read Bernhardt’s memoirs, Ma double vie (1907), alongside La Saignée, Henry Céard’s contribution to the 1880 publication Les Soirées de Medan, arguing that famous women like Bernhardt were seen at once as maternal figures and treacherous prostitutes, community pillars and meddling amateur diplomats.
