Abstract Signage and markers can be found throughout the visible world. These designed messages make announcements, deliver instructions, and advertise products or lifestyles. Each of these messages is supported by a signback, a structure that gives it a backbone and a platform from which to broadcast its content. The signback might be a stake in the lawn, a folded piece of cardboard, or a framework of galvanized steel. This photo essay documents instances of the signback and presents it as a category of design worthy of study. Specific examples demonstrate the various ways the support and the message of a sign are enmeshed, physically and conceptually.
