Introduction Neoliberalism, as a term, has the particular distinction of being both esoteric and overused. Until quite recently, it was rarely heard outside of academic contexts, while within them it became virtually a shorthand for contemporary capitalism and its myriad social manifestations. For the purposes of this introduction, we use the term neoliberalism to denote a global state of affairs, including both hegemonic ideologies and infinite micro-level processes associated with certain political economic tendencies that first emerged in the 1970s. These include, but are not limited to, the increasing integration of the world market shaped by processes of financialization, the weakening of organized labor movements, and the promotion of entrepreneurialism. This special issue (SI) of Design & Culture examines some of the ways that such developments have both expanded and constricted the purview of design, as well as ways that design has shaped and continues to shape processes of neoliberalization. A key premise of this SI is that contemporary design Arden Stern is a design historian whose scholarship focuses on graphic design, printing, and visual culture in the United States. Her research explores vernacular design practices and typography across multiple platforms, from hand-painted signage to ransom notes. She teaches in the Department of Humanities & Sciences as well as the graduate program in Media Design Practices at ArtCenter College of Design. Arden.Stern@artcenter.edu

Arden. Arden. Arden. Arden. Arden.Stern@artcenter.edu
