Feminist in a Software Lab: DifferenceþDesign provides an overview of how a digital platform for scholarly work brought the concerns of cultural theory into dialog with software development. As the Chair and Professor of Cinema and Media Studies at the University of Southern California’s School of Cinematic Arts, Tara McPherson has been a consistent contributor to the ongoing debates about whether and how feminist and critical race theories apply to the technologies underlying new media. After an introduction that explains how the Vectors Lab at USC was established, the book offers two major essays structured to be independent of one another: the first presents a strong argument for the role of theory in the history of computing; the second essay provides a more focused examination of the digital, multimedia journal Vectors and subsequent development of Scalar, a platform that allows authors to produce their own multimedia scholarship.
